Planning your Chinese Wedding Tea Ceremony

Location

The first thing you should consider is the location of your tea ceremony.Whether to hold it at your own home or at the hotel function room.

Home Sweet Home - There is no where that is more memorable than having the tea ceremony with your parents at your place (or technically your parent's place). If the house is able to accommodate the throng of relatives that are coming over, your wedding entourage and the buffet table, then go ahead. However, if your house is not able to hold such events, you may turn to the other location below.

Advantage - Home holds the most memories. Why not more?
Disadvantage - Pre and post clean up by none other than your parents.

Hotel/Restaurant - Most hotels are flexible to allow a function room to be used by the wedding couples where they booked their wedding banquet. However, this is base on availability and can only be confirmed around a month or less before your AD.

Advantage
- Both side relatives will be 'punctual' for the banquet as they will need to come for the tea ceremony first.
- There is also no need for them to travel twice. First to your house during the day and your wedding banquet location in the evening.
- Hotels will also provide chairs for your relatives so they do not need to be standing around waiting for their turn or for the event to end.
- You do not need to order additional buffet for both sides since the the banquet will be starting soon. That will save you a few hundreds and less coordination.

Disadvantage - If your hotel does not have a function room for you at the last minute, you will need to do the tea ceremony at the banquet hall itself.

If you are traveling to both locations (your home and your wife's) anyway, then have the tea ceremony with your immediate families and the rest of your relatives at the hotel.

Tea Set and Tea

Excited couples usually tend to shop for a new tea set. Why not ask your married friends if they are willing to lend it to you? Although there is a high chance that they do not know where they kept it which will strengthen your decision not to buy a new tea set.

The tea set IMO should also have more than 4 cups since Chinese do not like the number 4. And having more cups means that less people share the cups.

I will suggest that the cups which are for the parents to be the normal cups like porcelain and the rest of the relatives cups to be disposable cups for hygiene purpose

So in case you are having difficulties finding the tea recipe online, here it is.

Ingredients:
  • 100g Red Dates
  • 100g Whole Lotus Seeds with skin
  • 50g Pak Hup
  • 3 Tablespoon of Sugar
  • 6 liters of water
Methods:
  1. Wash red dates, lotus seeds and pak hups 2 to 3 times with water.
  2. Put all the washed ingredients into a pot filled with boiling water.
  3. Cover the pot and cook over low heat for 45 minutes.
  4. Add sugar and bring it to boil before turning off the stove.
  5. Serve it lukewarm.
Or...just ask your mum

Another benefit if you hold your tea ceremony at your hotel, the hotel staff will prepare the tea for you. Problem solved!

Where to hold the actual ceremony?

If you are holding the tea ceremony at your own home, consider the vantage points for the photographer, natural lights, space to maneuver , etc. This will save the confusion of finding the right spot for the ceremony.

As the photographers will be taking the photos diagonally and from the side, try placing the chairs and take some photos yourself. Try all angles and don't be afraid to move your coffee table or side table to make way for the ceremony.

Manpower Allocation (During the actual ceremony)

So if you think your role is just to stand there and offer tea think again. All of a sudden, after your parents finished their tea, who is next? Where is this person? Are the cups being washed? Where do I put my ang baos and gifts?

This is the most important part of the tea ceremony where many wedding couples lose control. Don't fret, here are some roles for you to assign to your entourage to help with your tea ceremony.

The Loudspeaker

Who - Either the sibling or father side auntie/cousin. Who has better knowledge of your family's hierarchy than your siblings or cousin. You can also find the ever 'onz' auntie to help you out too.

Role - Calling the next relative in line for their turn to drink the wedding couple's tea. If you are assigning one of the sister to do it, give her a list of the relatives names for her to read out.

The Statue

Who - The sister with the steadiest hands / nicest smile (cause she will be in most of the photographs)

Role - To stand there, smile and hold the plate of tea cups while the wedding couples' serves tea. Try not to put the whole tea pot on the plate as the porcelain tea pot with tea is indeed heavy even for a guy.

The Runners

Who - 2 of the sisters

Role - To pour the tea from the tea pot nearby and pass it to the Statue.

1. The Runner will collect the used tea cups and passed it to another Runner for washing at the sink. Repeat.
2. The Runner will collect the used tea cups, empty the left over tea in a small bucket and rinse the tea cups with warm water in another bucket. Repeat. (Not recommended due to hygiene)

The Safe Keeper

Who - Maid of Honor aka Bridesmaid or Sibling

Role - To safe keep the Ang Baos and gifts given by the parents and relatives.

The 媒婆 (Optional but very fun to have)

Who - 媒婆 herself or any of your loud Aunties. Otherwise, get one of your sisters to Google the phrases used during tea ceremonies.

Role - Other than narrating the auspicious phrases, she will be the one to bring out the atmosphere of the whole tea ceremony. Our seniors love weddings bustling with noise and excitement.

Well, maybe we should have went for the sister as the 媒婆 instead.

Quick Tips

1. Other than your parents, there is no need to kneel and serve tea to the rest of your relatives.
2. Prepare a soft pillow cushion if kneeling is required.
3. Serve tea to the groom side first. His parents, grandparents, father side relatives, mother side relatives, siblings. Followed by the bride's side.
4. It is not necessary to receive tea from younger cousins. However if your parents/relatives insist, always keep a few red packets of $2 with you.
5. Both the couples can serve a cup of tea together to each of the relative rather than 2 cups to 1 relative.
6. For jewellery gifts, only wear the jewellery from your parents/in-laws and your grandparents.
7. You may also like to ask your helper to note down who was the one that gave you the gift.
8. Don't forget to thank your helpers and always give them a token of appreciation.

With the above planning and manpower allocation, we hope that this post help upcoming wedding couples breeze thru their tiresome but fun filled actual day.

How much money do you need to get married for an average Singaporean Groom

Finally a realistic wedding article for all our fellow Singapore grooms out there. Rather than viewing XX number of ideas for your wedding, how to be a suave groom, etc. Here is a post that is more practical and relevant for a groom.

How to Budget for my Wedding?

My first advise is to cross this thought off your mind. You are getting married to the girl of your dreams. Seriously, are you going to budget how much you are going to spend on the whole wedding?

Don't get me wrong. You will still want to budget but you will be budgeting base on the individual items rather than putting a figure, say $80,000 for the whole wedding.Your budget should be based on each items' value comparison to the rest of the same category.

Bye Piggy
The Great Expectation - Going into Debt
Secondly, you must expect yourself to go into debt after your wedding. However, make sure that you have cleared your previous debts and installments before going into this new one. Singaporeans are pretty accustomed to going into debt. From our schools loans, car/bike loans to your credit card installments on your new gaming rig, I'm sure we are no strangers.

If possible, always go for a 0% two year installment which most credit cards offers.

With this expectation, your mind will be in a better state to handle all the stress and pressure going on from proposal till post wedding. Aim to give yourself two years to clear your wedding debts. Of course you should also work within your budget.

Remember the article that came out last year about a couple who spent so much on their wedding and got into so many problems.

A clever man learns from his own mistakes. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others.

Planning Timeline
As of our generation, wedding proposals are no longer a secret now. Once the BTO flat is booked, our GFs will know that from that day onwards to the TOP, we have to propose to her. You should at least give yourself 1 year from the proposal to hold your banquet. This will give you sufficient time to plan and save some money for the wedding banquet.

Most couples will hold their wedding banquet 2 years before their BTO flats are ready. It sounds about right as it gives them ample time to clear their wedding debts before going into a new one.

So depending on your financial scenario, plan ahead.

Your First Purchase - The proposal ring
SALES are always going on at those jewellery shops so make sure you buy them at the appropriate time. Check out around 3 stores and do your research intensively. Ask the staff about how diamonds are categorized, cut and most importantly, how well the ring can last for normal day usage. You would not want to buy a proposal ring only to be worn on occasions.

Since most people are likely to ask only the carat size, keep the carat size reasonable and also suitable for your wife's finger. Clarity and cutting may be upgraded in the "future".

Budget around $1500 - $2,000 onwards and pay by installment plan. Remember to base on the value rather than the price.

Wedding Bands
What?! I need to buy another ring for her? Yup, this will be the ring that will be exchanged during your ROM. No need for the fanciful diamonds on the rings this time.

Budget around less than $1,000 for both rings and go by installment plan too.

Bridal Packages:
The budget should be around $3,800 onwards but remember again that it is the value that counts. How many photos do I get? How many pages in the album will there be? How many gowns do I get? Does this include wedding car, MUA, photographer, etc.

Pre Wedding Shoots - Singapore/Malaysia/Overseas?
I attended a wedding last year and I overheard a guest asking the groom casually if the photo (of them on a beach) was taken at Sentosa. The groom said no, it was in Barcelona. Ouch!

Would you want to spend $6,000 more running around in Taiwan sweating and not enjoying the trip? Or should you use this money for your Europe honeymoon with your wife?

This big ticket item will use up most of your budget at this moment. But luckily most bridal shops offer installment plans as well. So go on and swipe your card.

Make Up Artist
This is a very important choice your wife has to make. Although the MUA normally comes with the bridal package, she must be comfortable with the MUA and during the pre-wedding shoot makeup is when she will know.

If she is not comfortable, look online for other freelance but professional MUAs.

No installment plans as freelancer only accept cash. However, the initial payment is just the confirmation deposit.

Photography and Video Package
Most bridal package includes only the pre-wedding shoot but not the AD shoot package. There are many companies offering their services. Do not bargain on the price. Trust me. Their work is tough. Negotiate on their package instead like the number of hard copies they will give, etc. You would not want a photographer or videographer asking you to smile when he himself looks so grumpy.

Most of the companies do not offer installment plans. But the payment is normally a deposit, 2nd payment on your actual day and final payment when you collect the photos. So you should have sufficient time to budget.

Wedding Cars and Car Deco
Finally an item where you can have it FOC!

Most couples will try to remove this item during their negotiations with the bridal shop and borrow a presentable car from their friends, relatives or even using their own car. The savings is not much though. Around $200 to $250.

Buffet
Another item which you can remove! The buffet normally caters to your relatives when they come over both houses for tea ceremony. To save on catering two buffets, hold your tea ceremony at the hotel before the banquet. Discuss with your banquet manager for the additional function room. They should be able to get it for your FOC but don't take my word for it.
This will also allow better space management especially if the house is too small to cater to your 5 uncles and 5 aunties. Not including their spouses and kids.

Another two more plus points are that the relatives will come earlier to your wedding banquet and they do not need to travel twice for your wedding.

However do hold the tea ceremony at both house for the parents and siblings whom are the most important people of your life. You will just need to cater light snacks especially for your band of brothers and sisters.

New Wedding Bed
Say goodbye to your single bed and your smelly pillows. In comes the Queen. Literally.

As there is a high chance that your BTO flat is not ready, just buy a simple queen size bed frame and an ok mattress for your current nest. This will help keep your budget low.

As the biggest item to transport to your new house will be the mattress, it is advisable to keep it at your parents' place and invest in a new one after you move into your new nest.

Honeymoon Package
Travel fairs are being held frequently throughout the year and good deals can easily come about. Budget around $2,000 to $5,000 for non-Europe trips and see where this amount can bring you.

Remember that you may be taking a huge hit after your wedding banquet so try to choose a location where you can keep your expenses low.

Hotel Banquet Package (Very Important)
Finally, the all-important budget that we have been waiting for. In my previous post about the Wedding Ang Baorates, I briefly talked about why wedding couples incur such a huge deficit.

To recap, if a wedding table rate is $1200++ and if during the ‘negotiations’ you offered 10 table to your in-laws, these 10 tables’ ang bao will not go into your pocket but into theirs. So which means you have effectively make a loss of $12,000 before anything happens.

In order to get back this amount, you will need your other guests to give you $120 + $60 ($12,000 / 200 guests) If this amount seems not hopeful, the percentage goes lower if you hold less than 30 tables. Meaning 30 – 10 tables you are only left with 20 tables to recoup your losses. And your parents may also ask to keep the 10 tables’ ang baos to recoup their ang bao money they paid out during other relatives wedding. (Remember the time where 6th uncle’s son got married at Hilton when you were 12?)

So you are only left with 10 tables. Seriously how do you expect wedding couples to recoup their losses by giving them a Wedding Ang Bao rate card and asking the guests to 'pay' for their wedding banquet.

Remember my second point ‘Going into Debt’? Here we go.

Budget your loss. Aim for a 2 year recovery and not longer than that. If you are going to expect a huge loss from your banquet, you should change your hotel venue and look for a more pocket friendly hotel or even a restaurant.

As this item is the most important part of your wedding budget, I will be dedicating another post to help wedding couples budget and break even for the wedding banquet. Sounds impossible? Wait for my next post!

As every wedding couple’s expectation on certain items is different, discuss everything with your spouse and communicate with an open mind.

So REALLY how much money does an average Singapore groom needs to get married?

It depends on how much you value your wife and your own wedding. No one will judge you on where you hold your wedding or what proposal ring you have bought.

As the saying goes, your wedding is only for the both of you. So be a Man and give your wife everything within your means and she will treasure every moment of the wedding for the rest of her life.

Have a Happy Wedding!

Should We Follow the Wedding Ang Bao Rates 2014

Recently some websites has published the 2014 Wedding Ang Bao rate AGAIN..

Well this website is cool of course. Offering much needed tips and ideas for our already flustered wedding couples in Singapore. So I have nothing against them since I'm not on their directory. Wait. I'm not?

First let us look at the demand for this information and why did it came about. Most probably some wedding couple received an unmarked wedding ang bao of $10. Unfortunately all 287 Kiasu guests had written their name on their ang bao and only the bride's very close guy friend aka secondary school classmate aka ex-boyfriend aka again the 288th guest, did not write his name. Suay.

So the both of them wrote a long email to our favorite page STOMP expressing their disappointment in the wedding ang bao they had received. And so, as a Singapore culture, we need rules and regulations to help our fellow Singaporeans to know what to do in such scenario

The website says and I quote "There have been many instances when wedding couples were unable to recover the banquet cost from the ang baos given. This Ang Bao Market Rate is a guide to the giver on the appropriate amount to gift to the couple based on the average cost per seat."

So on the point where "wedding couples were unable to recover the banquet cost from the ang baos given." Did this website really know where the loss is from.

How did I lose 5 figures in my wedding banquet

During the 'negotiations' with the in-laws, one of the terms was that they wanted 10 tables for their relatives and friends. As a first time groom, you'll be nodding your head at everything they say. Not knowing that these 10 tables' ang baos do not go into your ang bao aka ROI box.

So if one table is $1200 without the ++++++, 10 tables will be $12,000!!! Which means each guests' ang bao must be $120+$60 (base on $12,000/200 guest) in order for you to break even.

Did I really lose 5 figure? Nope. I broke even at Fullerton Hotel hehe... and yes I did get a few $50 ang baos.

So moving on with life + the wedding ang bao market rate chart.

Say Xiao Ming is getting married and Xiao Ming does not have enough money for this wedding banquet due to the paying of 50% downpayment for his new white Chery QQ which he is going to use as his wedding car. Since there is ang bao guide which Xiao Ming can conveniently slot into his wedding invites to his guests friends, he should be able to break even or make profit from his wedding banquet. Cool! Let's get married at Capella!!!

Taken from the Wedding Ang Bao rate 2014

Sounds a bit like crowd-funding right?

And if today I'm invited to a wedding banquet, am I expected to help the couples recover the banquet cost? How would I feel as a guest? Is this wedding couple my friend, my colleague or associate really 'inviting' me or are they treating me like a someone who is funding their wedding business and they can get married FOC. Ok I'm not that bad. But seriously this will be running thru my mind if this couple PM me and says: "Hey buddy, do check out the 2014 wedding ang bao rate before coming to my wedding banquet ok?"

Let's say I were to give $100 for the Capella dinner banquet and I write my name on the ang bao. How will/should the wedding couples feel when they record this down? (I assume you guys do because I did record). Write a letter to Stomp? Click un-friend me in Facebook?

You are the Answer

Ask yourself why would you want to hold your wedding banquet at this hotel? Any special reasons or theme? If you really do decide to hold at a high end location, then you must be prepared to face the music at the end of your wedding banquet and don't expect the guests to recover your cost.

The Wedding Banquet Purpose

Be a man and show your friends what a beautiful bride or handsome groom you have . Let you ex-bfs/gfs cry when they see your wedding pics and wonder why they let you go. Let guests gawk at your wife as you strut her down the aisle and tell them she's yours!

Ok I'm kidding. There's 1001 reasons why you want to hold a wedding banquet but ultimately there should not be any expectations in getting back your investments.

So what's the right rate for wedding ang baos in Singapore from my point of view?

Restaurant min $80 to ~
Hotels min $120 to ~

If you feel you are having a bad financial time to attend their wedding, just inform them that you are unable to make it. They won't hold it to heart even if you are their best friend. Not at the last minute of course.

I sincerely hope that this website do not post the ang bao rates for 2015 or ever again and cause mind games between the wedding couples and their guests.

Tip of the Day:

To stamp your name in forever memory of your friend's wedding, give them a $10 ang bao for their wedding banquet and make sure you write your name.

Cheers and have a blast attending wedding banquets!

Tips on Choosing the Right Wedding Car

One of the many decisions which need to be made during your wedding preparations will be which wedding car should I go for?

If you have your own car, my honest answer will be "Use your own car for your wedding!" One of my friends went against his in-laws' protest of driving his white Picanto to pick up his wife on his wedding day and I respect him for that.

Why? Only car owners in Singapore will know the obstacles, hardship and money that goes into his ride. And it is always a groom's pride and joy to pick up his missus in his ride which he has spent his effort on. After all, this may also be the car that they dated in.

So how about Chery QQ or Proton? As long as you are confident that your car won't break down during your big day, go ahead and use it.

However, if you do not own a car, here are some tips on which car you should go for:

Convertibles:

Our BMW 120i with Yong Wei and Jasmine

Pros - Great for actual day photos. Check out our banner and you will know why.
Who - For grooms who have driving license and the journey between A and B is short.
Cons - Small boot. Will require another car to transport your barang barang along to the hotel. A lot of care has to be taken when filling the boot as the mechanism may cause the roof to be stuck. If the groom seldom drives, he may feel stress driving such a sporty car. Most convertibles are low and requires proper navigation at multi-storey carparks.

Don't worry about wet weather. So far wedding AD either rains in the morning and stops in the afternoon or vice versa. There's more than enough time to snap some top down shots.

View our range of convertibles here.

Sedans:

With Joseph and Joanna in BMW 320i M Sedan

Pros - Large Boot. Usually big enough for one luggage and your wife's gowns. Worry free journey. Just lie back and shut your eyes while traveling from point A and B.
Who - Grooms who drive frequently may wish to free themselves of the jams formed on the SLE and PIE during the afternoon trip. Wedding couples who stay far from each other also should get a sedan to have a good rest during the journey to and fro.
Cons - I really can't think of any. Maybe the chauffeur that comes with the sedan keeps flirting with your wife? Let me know of any.

View our range of sedans here.

After deciding which type of car you should go for, the next question is:

Where do I get my cars?

FOC Cars

From your friends, relatives or associates of course. It should be free but as a gesture, you should be giving him/her a big ang bao. However if there is any last minute changes in the availability of the car, it does cause a strain in the relationship depending how you handle it.

OMO

One man operation. You will find many owners willing to rent out their cars in Google for a fee much lower than the market rate. They also offer half day, full day and per hour rate. Sounds good? Let me give you a scenario. On a profit point of view, if I were to accept a per hour rate say 4 hours first and then got another offer for a half day rate which nets me more but slightly more hours too, which one will I go for? Since I cannot do 2 weddings in a day, I will jump to the more profitable booking.

OMO also do not have back up cars for their couples. If something goes wrong, you will be able to get your deposit back but you will be scurrying around looking for a back up car. Something which you don't want to do so near your big day.

*But was WhiteWeddingCars a OMO before? Yes! But I worked with 2 agencies which had back up cars and I only had one single rate.

Car Rental Companies

They offer a wide range of cars but they do not only do weddings. If you were to pick up your car on Friday evening. they may rent out the car from Wednesday to Friday afternoon since the car is available and rent for profit. However, as most renters don't take care of the car they rent, the car may come back in a bad shape with scratches or minor damages. With no time to touch up the car, you can either stress yourself to find a back up car or take the damaged car. Maybe with an additional discount if your barter skills are good.

You may also be convinced into getting a 3 day or weekend package which offers a better per day rate as advertised. Picking up of the car and returning will also need to be done at their office.

Wedding Car Rental Companies

There are only a few companies focusing on wedding cars in Singapore. These companies will give you the right service and advice for your car choice. Their rental timing and packages usually fits most wedding couples and offer pick up and collection at the florist and hotel which is much convenient.

These wedding cars are only for Singapore roads and are not available for JB pick ups. Wedding couples who need a pickup in JB may need to go ahead with the rental companies.

There may also be a chance where you may also face the same situation where your car may be damaged by the previous groom. So make sure you check if there is any wedding booking before your AD and have a back up car.

Do take some time to plan your wedding songs rather than ask the hotel/restaurant to play their list. This is your big day. Make it memorable.

Two is twice as nice as one

Hi friends,      I hope you had a lovely weekend!  This hairstyle is so quick and easy, and I always love double buns :-)  I added the poo...
